How to Get Started: Part Six - Implementation III: Quick Change 2

In my last post, I talked about why I get to quick change early in an agile enterprise implementation.

This time, I'll talk about how to go about teaching quick change.

First, I'll go over concepts, which I cover in the classroom, then I'll review tactics.

I try to get across a few basic concepts:
  1. We're working on reducing setup and changeover times so we can do more changeovers.  In other words, total changeover time during a given period might actually increase.  The idea is to schedule shorter runs.  (This sometimes takes a bit of  'splaining before operators and supervisors get hold of it.)
  2. Reducing setup and changeover times DOES NOT mean that setup techs  will be working harder or faster.  Like I tell workshop participants, if you're pouring sweat and your knuckles are skinned up when you finish a changeover....you're doing it wrong.
  3. Reducing setup and changeover times is all about reducing or eliminating anything the frustrates the setup tech.
  4. The concept of internal and external steps is a big deal.
Here are some materials I use.  Just as is the case with the 5S materials, they're pretty simple but that's OK.  Most of the learning is going to take place on the shop floor anyway.
